In 2003, Springfield Armory introduced the subcompact version of the XD, which by necessity of the time retained the 10-round capacity, but in a much smaller frame intended for use as a backup or concealed-carry sidearm.

It arrived at an awkward time for a new, full-size pistol, because magazine capacities were limited to 10 rounds. Springfield Armory procured the rights to the pistol, renamed it "XD" (for X-Treme Duty), and brought the handgun to U.S. It started out as the Croatian HS 2000 pistol, which followed a decade of development as a military sidearm through numerous iterations. The Springfield Armory XD has seen a number of changes in its relatively short lifespan. It's just not a very popular gun compared to the rest of the XD line.The Springfield Armory XD Mod.2 features a number of ergonomic upgrades that promote more comfortable, intuitive shooting in a compact concealed-carry gun.
*Langdon Tactical is the only company I know of that makes XDE upgrades, although there might be another. That being said, for a light/laser, I'm 95% sure that the rail and trigger guard section of the frame is the same so anything fitting one should fit the other. There are some "upgrades" with the XDE over the XDS, but it's mostly just that it's hammer fired instead of striker fired (lighter trigger, easier to rack the slide, and can use double action if you have a light primer strike or bad primer). It sounds like they either didn't know what they were talking about or there was some miscommunication there. It isn't that you can't get a different length, but they're imported as completed guns, so you'd have to find someone with a destroyed frame or someone who wants to trade slides/barrels (to my knowledge, there are no aftermarket slides for the XDE). Slide/barrel length on an XDE is pretty much what you get when you originally buy it. There may be more, but they are two completely different guns. Barrels, extractors, and ejectors might also be, but not slides. The only things I know are interchangeable are the magazines (XDS extended mags work without the sleeve), mag release, and sights.
